With springtime at our doorstep and summer right around the corner, you’re probably putting your hostess hat on and thinking about all the fabulous outdoor parties you want to host during the warmer seasons. While you may already be a master at hosting game nights, sit-down dinners, and others, perhaps you haven’t tried your hand at a true Garden Party yet. If you find yourself in the position of planning one and don’t know where to start, let’s take a look at some of the bases that must be covered.

Setting & Decor

As the hostess, you may be inspired to host a Garden Party because you are looking at your own fabulous garden and want to show it off to your favorite friends and loved ones. If you have a garden already, you’ve got one of the essential elements down. You can still turn your backyard into a beautiful Garden Party oasis if you don’t. Decor you’ll want to pick up will be bouquets of seasonal flowers – native ones are even better – and maybe even some faux flowers if you’re going to go over the top. If you don’t have some quaint tables for the event, floral tablecloths can work with existing outdoor patio furniture and tables you already own.

Set Expectations

When it comes to invites these days, many people go the route of emails or even group texts. If you want to throw a proper Garden Party, you’ll like to send out beautiful invitations through the postal service. Make sure you include a dress code there – though most people know what they should wear to a Garden Party – you want everyone selfie-ready. When it comes to what you wear, searching for the perfect fitted summer dresses, gloves, and stylish hats for women is a given. Think of a modern Great Gatsby vibe. Dress codes may seem dated, but they help pull off the party’s feel and help you feel like all the hard work you put in is worth it.

Garden Games Are A Given

You’ll want to have some form of entertainment for your guests at your party – games are great for outdoor parties. If you wish to set up a small croquet course or a couple of cornhole boards, the choice is yours. If you have a larger backyard, badminton is another excellent option. Just make sure you have some fun games for those in attendance to play before they sit down and marvel at your gorgeous tablescapes.

Fancy Finger Foods

Of course, as a foodie, the menu is probably what you’ll pay most attention to. Garden parties are all about delicate, fun, and fancy finger foods. While charcuterie boards are in vogue, they make a great addition to a grazing table. For the sit-down portion of your party, think delectable quiches, cucumber sandwiches, and fruit salads. You want the food at the party to feel light and airy, just like the weather. Plan accordingly and make sure you make more than you think you will, as some people who didn’t RSVP are always bound to show up anyway.

Signature Cocktails Are a Must

Even if you decide to hire a bartender, having a signature drink or two is one of the keys to a memorable party. You want to come up with a name that goes with the theme of your party, so perhaps after a flower (and include the flower as a garnish); you could also name the drink after yourself or an attendee you’re honoring during the party. Make sure there’s a small menu at the bar, including the ingredients of your signature cocktail. Of course, you’ll also want to have dry options for those who decide not to partake in alcohol. Since your party is during the warmer weather, water infused with berries or lemons is an easy go-to. Make it sparkling if you want to kick things up a notch.

Garden parties are events that everyone remembers, the thoughtful details, the beautiful attire, and of course the food and drink – everyone’s bound to make some core memories. Make sure while planning your party you also have a backup plan just in case of inclement weather. A good host is always prepared for the unexpected!
