History & Interesting Facts

It is true that the story of Benihana starts with a descendant of a samurai warrior and a small Tokyo coffee shop. After the war, samurai descendant and popular entertainer Yunosuke Aoki thought about starting a coffee shop with his wife named Katsu. With the desire to offer something different than other coffee shops in the area, Yunosuke Aoki took on his bike to travel over 20 miles to purchase real sugar he serves in his shop.

Using his seed money, this man who also goes by the name Rocky took out a loan and used this to start the first Japanese teppanyaki restaurant in America, specifically on West 56th street. It is named after the Tokyo coffee shop of his parents, Benihana. It opened in 1964, featuring authentic Japanese farmhouse interiors and food prepared on steel teppanyaki grills right at the sight of the customers.

Their highly-trained chefs that create teppanyaki are happy about their customers seeing the intricacies of their knife work and cooking theatrics, not to mention showcasing the good taste of the food right from the cooking process.

There was one time when legendary food critic Clementine Paddleford gave Benihana a rave review that even catapulted the restaurant to greater success.

Not so long after, Rocky opened the second Benihana restaurant in New York, and the third one in Chicago. By the 1970s, there were six Benihana branches in the United States, with more opening every day. Sadly, in 2008, Rocky Aoki passed away at the age of 69, but his legacy lives on with over 70 Benihana restaurants in the United States, and not just in the country, but in the Caribbean, in Central America, and in South America. They have served over 100 million meals over the years.

Benihana gives back to the community. One of the missions and goals of the community is to engage and enhance the community. They are known to providing donations of their delicious food to various neighboring medical facilities, first responders, and more local heroes. Here are a few of their initiatives.
