Boston Market is quite a story. Otherwise known as Boston Market Corporation, or Boston Chicken until 1995, Boston Market refers to your American fast casual restaurant chain with headquarters in Golden, Colorado. Rohan Group owns Boston Market. It has a great presence in the Northeastern and Midwestern regions of the United States, with a significant presence in California, Florida, and Texas.
As of November 2020, the chain has an estimated 346 company-owned restaurant locations across 28 states, including Puerto Rico and Ramstein-Miesenbach. In the early 2000s, Boston Market operated two locations in Toronto, Ontario in Canada. In the early 2002 it entered the Australian market, launching nine stores in Sydney by 2004, before converting some of its stores to McDonald’s and bidding farewell to the Australian market later that year because of competitive pressures. You will learn more about this a little later in the history section of our post.
In June 2016, Boston Market IP Company, Ltd., a Boston Market Corporation affiliate, signed an area development agreement with Al-Ghunaim Trading Co. Ltd., leading to opening several restaurants of Boston Market in the Middle East.

Boston Market History
It was in 1985 when the founders of Boston Market rented an empty store in Newton, purchased rotisseries to roast its chickens, and collected recipes for sides like mashed potatoes, garden vegetables, and cornbread, leading to the opening of the first Boston Chicken store, as what it has been called then. The store was a success. Word-of-mouth led it to have a space in the Boston Globe, and gathered several customers wanting their meals.
In 1989, George Naddaff, the person who opened the first Kentucky Fried Chicken in the Boston area, checked out Boston Chicken. According to history, he kept coming back because he loved not just the food but the restaurant model. He expressed his desire to acquire the company in order to expand it to various other locations.
This George Naddaff persisted he wanted to buy the business, so the proponents of Boston Market sold him the company.
There were other business individuals who were attracted to acquiring Boston Market. In the 1990s, Saad J. Nadhir bought the chain, and by 1992, there were 217 Boston Market stores in the United States.
At this time, the headquarters of Boston Market were also transferred to Golden, Colorado. In 1995, the name “Boston Chicken” has been changed to “Boston Market,” reflecting the fact that the stores are now selling other meats in the main courses, including meatloaf, ham, and turkey.
During the spring of 1997, Boston Market had over 1,100 restaurants and more than $1 billion in annual sales. Following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, McDonald’s bought Boston Market in 2000 for $173 million.
With McDonald’s managing Boston Market, it was able to rebound from its fall, and has also been able to sell frozen food packages versions of its items in supermarkets. In 2007, McDonald’s sold the company to Sun Capital Partners. It continues to serve various customers in the United States and worldwide.
