Morris Reaves founded Cook Out in 1989. He is also the current owner of the company, with his son Jeremy Reaves as the chief executive officer.
Greensboro, North Carolina welcomed the first Cook Out location in 1989. After opening this first location, more than 50 other locations followed suit in North Carolina. As of May 2021, there are 290 locations operating across 10 states.
The first out-of-state store opened in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 2010, then in 2011, the restaurant launched branches in South Carolina and Virginia. They unveiled plans to launch in more locations in 2014. In 2016, they expanded to Mississippi and Alabama. In 2019, they opened more locations in Virginia.
