So you’ve made a pact to save money on baking and you want to learn how to make a cake from scratch. Sure box cake mixes are easy but they are full of chemicals and they won’t save you money.
I have a classic cake recipe that is the perfect base for several different types of cakes. This cake recipe has less chemicals than those box mixes and you’ll save
What you need to make a cake from scratch:
- 2 cups (475 ml) all-purpose flour
- 1 cup (225 ml) sugar
- 1 cup (225 ml) milk
- 2 teaspoons of baking powder
- 2 tsp (10 ml) of vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup (175 ml) of vegetable oil
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) margarine
Preparation
Sift the baking powder and flour together for the cake
Add all of the other ingredients together and use a hand mixer to mix the cake batter well
Grease the pans that you will be using for the cake
Pour the mixture into the baking pans and set in oven
Bake for 40 minutes at 375 degrees (200 C)
This cake batter usually fits a 9 inch cake pan. You can test the cake by using a toothpick. If the toothpick is clean after you have stuck it into your cake, then the cake is done.
Unless boxed cake mixes are on sale for $1, you will be able to save between $1 – 2 by purchasing the raw ingredients and learning hot to make a cake from scratch
