While pecan trees can be grown in backyards, they certainly take quite a while to grow the delicious tree nuts. Pecans are well worth the wait of the growing time and can be used for personal use and sold for extra cash. With hundreds of different recipes calling for pecans don’t sit back and wait for the first harvest. Plant the tree, then go buy a bag of pecans to make some delicious recipes.
Grandchildren will certainly reap the benefits of a pecan tree being planted today. According to the October/November 2015 issue of Organic Gardening Magazine, nuts will begin to produce in about 5 to 7 years from planting when the tree is a grafted pecan tree. It also states that pecan trees will produce and live for 100 years or more.

Pecan pie can be made anytime of the year, but tends to be more popular around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Many pecan pies will look beautiful, but upon tasting the pie the pecans will have a more chewy texture. Before beginning the recipe start by roasting the pecans. Place two cups of pecans on a baking dish and spray with cooking spray or bake pecans at 350 degrees for five minutes and brush with butter.
With either of the above techniques cook pecans for five minutes at 350 degrees remove from oven and stir. Continue roasting for an additional four to five minutes. Remove from oven and let cool. Total roasting time should be between 10-15 minutes. Then begin the crust of the pie. There are many varieties of ready-made pie crust available at local grocery stores or fix a home-made crust for the pie.
Pecan Pie Ingredients
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup white corn syrup
- 3 eggs
- 1/3 cup melted butter
- 1/3 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups roasted pecans
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Pecan Pie Recipe
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt butter. In a bowl mix together brown sugar, corn syrup, melted butter, vanilla, and salt. In a separate bowl mix eggs together before adding them to the other ingredients. Stir until well blended. Place prepared pie crust into pie pan following package directions. Pour pie filling into pie crust and add the pecans to the top. Some pecans may sink to the bottom. Place pie in preheated oven and bake for 60 minutes.
To keep the crust from burning remove the pie from the oven after about 20-30 minutes. Place a strip of aluminum foil around the edge of the pie. This will keep the pie crust nice and brown. Continue baking until the full hour of baking is complete. Remove from oven and test to see if the pie is done cooking by inserting a knife into the center. If the knife comes out clean the pie is done. If the pie sticks to the knife then continue cooking for an addition 10 minutes.
Pecans themselves can be a little bland and adding a few ingredients will not only make them delicious, but addictive. When making a batch of candied pecans think about making a double batch to give as a sweet treat to a teacher, friend, pastor, or family member. The easiest way to make the following recipe is to line the baking dish with parchment paper. Clean up will also be a snap since the parchment paper can be thrown away.
Candied Pecan Ingredients
- 2 1/2 pecans raw
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon allspice
- 1 large egg white, beaten lightly
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Candied Pecan Recipe
Line baking dish with parchment paper. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. In a large bowl, stir raw pecans with beaten egg white. In another bowl, stir together sugar, cinnamon, allspice, and salt. Combine all ingredients and stir until pecans are well coated. Spread onto parchment paper in single layer and bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool. Nuts may need to be broken up a bit before storing in air tight container.
When making recipes around the holidays make extra to give as gifts. Purchase primitive baskets or holiday boxes and place air tight container inside and cover with holiday fabric for a magnificent edible treat. Some people can be hard to buy for, but food is almost always a good choice.
