History

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen was started in Arabi, Louisiana, a New Orleans suburb. It first launched on June 12th, 1972 as “Chicken on the Run.” The owner, Al Copeland has this goal of competing with Kentucky Fried Chicken. At first, he failed. So he reopened the restaurant four days later as Popeyes Mighty Good Chicken.

By 1975, it was renamed to Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken. Al Copeland started to franchise the restaurant in 1976, starting in Louisiana. In 1984, the chain grew to Canada, opening the 500th restaurant in 1985. A person named B.P. Newman of Laredo, Texas acquired various franchises in Texas and in surrounding states.

In 1990, Copeland Enterprises went through a series of debts, and in 1991, the company filed for bankruptcy protection. As a result, the court approved in October 1992 the creation of the new parent company for Popeyes, along with Church’s, that is, America’s Favorite Chicken Company, Inc.

In 2001, America’s Favorite Chicken Company, Inc. went public with its initial public offering. It also announced its plans to develop by launching new locations in Australia, solidifying their presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

In June 2014, Popeyes announced it has successfully re-acquired full control of its seasonings, recipes, and other of its own food preparation techniques from Diversified Foods & Seasonings, which remained under the management of Al Copeland. As of 2018, Popeyes has over 3,000 restaurants worldwide.
