At Ruth’s Chris, people always celebrate with sizzle. Why so? They believe indulgence lives in this restaurant, where perfectly prime steak meets the classics such as the New Orleans-inspired sides, as well as hand-crafted cocktails served with the warm hospitality of the Ruth’s Chris brand.
The story of Ruth’s Chris started with a woman named Ruth Fertel whose bold vision and recipe for success catapulted the restaurant to become one of the world’s legendary steak houses. It is all about women empowerment in the history of this restaurant.
In 1965, a time when women could not even apply for a bank card without the signature of their husband, the founder, Ruth Fertel risked it all, mortgaging her home to purchase a small steak house in New Orleans, Chris Steak House. A single mother with two boys, she taught herself the restaurant business, conquered the challenges, and redefined what hospitality is all about.
In 1967, the name Ruth’s Chris Steak House was born. The first franchise opened in 1977. This led Ruth’s Chris become the world’s largest find dining company. In 1989, Hawaii welcomed the first Ruth’s Chris in the location.
In 2005, Ruth’s Chris took the step to giving guests the opportunity to invest in the company with the initial public offering.
Today, Ruth’s Chris continues to immerse individuals into the best steaks, plus so much more.
You might be wondering how Ruth’s Chris got its name, since the founder is Ruth Fertel, where did the name Chris come from? Well, when a kitchen fire destroyed a food establishment named Chris Steak House in 1976, Ruth was forced to relocate her business, but unfortunately, the name Chris Steak House was not allowed to come along. Short on time, she improvised, adding her own name, thus giving birth to “Ruth’s Chris Steak House.”
Ruth Fertel has been since known as the First Lady of Steak. From a 60-seater steak house, she was able to build a business that is known worldwide, but never losing sight of the original recipe for success, that is, perfect steak paired with the good times and warm hospitality that the customers get each time they visit the restaurant.

“When I started franchising, that really got the name out,” said Ruth Fertel, “and the more the name became known, the busier we became in all our restaurants. Our name recognition spread. In fact, all our franchisees were people who had eaten at one time or another in one of our restaurants. We never looked for franchisees. They came to us.”
