History & Interesting Facts

The story of Saltgrass dates back to the 1800s, when millions of Longhorns freely roamed around Texas. With the taste of beef becoming the new favorite in the north, ranchers in Texas prospered as never before. The Longhorns were driven to the Texas Gulf Coast to graze on the abundant coastal salt grass every winter. When they headed for market, there have been known to follow the legendary Salt Grass Trail, distinctive far and wide for creating the best beef in the Lone Star State.

“Our pledge is simple,” says Saltgrass. “Honor the old legends while making a little history of our own.”

In 1952, four riders revived this historic trail ride to publicize the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo opening. Right on this very day, the ride has become a yearly celebration of the original Texas spirit. The first Saltgrass Steak House still stands along this historic trail.

Thus, Saltgrass recaptures the flavors of the open campfire – steaks, chicken, and seafood chargrilled to perfection. This, complete with pieces of bread, soups, and desserts, is created from scratch daily.

Award-Winning Steakhouse

The campfire-inspired fare of Saltgrass is no longer limited to the enjoyment of hungry food revelers in the Lone Star State. The original Texas steak house now brings significant cuts of chargrilled beef and the legendary down-home hospitality to Texas and beyond, including Oklahoma, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Nevada, Arkansas, Alabama, and Mississippi.

The Saltgrass menu captures the flavor of the open campfire, featuring Certified Angus Beef steaks that sizzle alone or with toppings.

To produce that mouthwatering flavor, each steak is topped with fresh garlic butter and seasoned with the original Saltgrass Seven-Steak Spice. Ranch Hand favorites include the Chicken Fried Steak and BBQ Baby Back Ribs. Grilled Chicken Breast and Chicken Laredo are touted as the juiciest around, and their shrimp is prepared fried, grilled, or stuffed BBQ enbrochette.

Plus, the Saltgrass combos stir up an appetite by offering an eclectic mix of entrees. Their appetizers include the signature Range Rattlers or jumbo fried jalapeños stuffed with whole shrimp and Jack cheese, capable of feeding a crowd. All bread, dressings, soups, and desserts are homemade from scratch, together with the signature Two-Fork Cheese Cake and Beer Bread.
