It is with great gladness that 2020 is drawing into its latter part and we can look forward to ringing in the new year. After what will have been an exceptionally difficult 12 months for many, now’s the time to give it all we’ve got for the hope of a great 2021. The occasion calls for all the glitz and glamour of true celebration and this year more than ever, we should toast the future with luxury and relish.
Ringing in the New Year is likely to be a different kind of celebration this year, and plans may have to be made on the hoof. But with the perfect fizz in your glass, no matter how big or small, constrained or not, it’s still possible to do it in style. Here’s to it.
Champagne and New Year’s Eve go hand in hand – what else should be popped and poured for loved ones to share that special moment?
Here we will explore the best of the best to sample this December 31, from classic choices to extravagant showstoppers. It’s time to treat yourself and wow your loved ones.
The Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs 2009 vintage is a cheerful option. Fresh and lively, it is a blend of chardonnays from the grand cru vineyards of Oiry, Chouilly, Cramant, Avize and Oger.
Floral and golden-hued, this Champagne offers a persistent, ripe citrus taste.
And it won’t get better reception – experts predict 2009 to have aged to its best potential this year.
A prestigious toast
A widely recommended vintage is the 2006 vintage of Veuve Clicquot’s Prestige Cuvée, La Grande Dame. The blend of 53% Pinot Noir and 47% Chardonnay from eight classic Grand Crus gives an intensity to its color and taste. Full-bodied, its sparkle is fine and it has a complex, spicy finish with aromas of coffee beans and toast.
A pink delight
Champagne’s oldest house, Ruinart, is a timeless choice for any celebration. Its Rosé is produced from 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay from premiers crus vineyards, blending the very best of recent vintage.
Delicate in color and scent, the taste is fresh and balanced, with a hint of currant. Its finish is occasional sweetness with a dash of spice.
The Louis Roederer Cristal 2008 is something truly outstanding and has been lauded as one of the finest Champagnes produced in decades.
A blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, this Cristal is crisp and pure, with honey, brioche, citrus zest, and white flowers on the nose and a long, chalky finish. It is, according to wine experts Millesima, “the perfection of Champagne.” A bottle of this would be an incredible thrill.
