How to Boost the Fiber Content of Your Muffins Quickly and Easily


Dietary fiber is very important. If you are looking for a more regular digestive system as well as decreasing your blood cholesterol levels, you need to boost your dietary fiber. Now, with that said, a lot of people have certain exceptions regarding fiber-rich foods. Let us face it. If Americans thought that eating a lot of broccoli is a good idea, then people would have loaded up on broccoli a long time ago. Healthy food might be great but it has an uphill climb as far as your food perceptions go.

Unfortunately, broccoli and other high-fiber fruits and veggies usually have a fairly tough reputation among consumers. Let us just be honest about it. As the old saying goes, “What is good for you might not necessarily be the tastiest.” This is definitely true when it comes to perceptions of taste. People still kind of get stuck when they are told that they have to eat their Brussels sprouts or broccoli. A lot of people think that eating those food items is more like a chore rather than a meal.

You really can’t blame adults-when they were kids, their parents pleaded with them to eat their carrots or Brussels sprouts. There’s an automatic sense of association between things that are supposed to be good for you and things that are not quite fun to eat. Part of this is probably the stress put on stubborn kids. Sure, your parents only wanted recipes best for your health but you really can’t be faulted for putting your foot down and standing your ground-or at least trying to. It was a battle of wills and all this comes back when you, as an adult, are faced with eating something that’s ‘good for you.’ The memories just come rushing back in the back of your head. In most cases, it is fully subconscious. And this is why old patterns are so hard to break.

Fair enough.

The good news is that there are many other food items out there that have a high level of fiber. You just have to be creative. You simply have to look around and try to introduce them to the stuff that you are cooking or baking to boost your family’s daily fiber content.

Now, one of the most unobtrusive ways to add a nice dose of dietary fiber to your baked goods is through the use of ground flaxseed. Let us get this out of the way. Flaxseed, in its normal form, can be a hassle. They look like dark, smaller versions of sesame seeds. They can be quite firm when you chew on them and most people normally would not want to munch down on flaxseed in this form.

However, when you ground up flaxseed, they still retain their high-fiber content, but they blend easily with whatever batter or bread dough you mix them with. This is why I recommend mixing in a lot of flaxseed in your baked goods. Whether you are cooking muffins, brownies, cupcakes, breads or cakes, it does not matter. By simply adding flaxseed to the mix, you boost the dietary fiber content of whatever it is you are baking tremendously.

The best part to all of this is that you do so unobtrusively. What I mean by that is when people bite down on your muffins right after you serve them on muffin pans, people are not going to notice immediately notice that they are biting down on something that has a tremendously high amount of fiber. Instead, they enjoy themselves because they taste the fluffy interior of the muffin or cupcake that you are serving them. Little do they know that they are actually getting a nice dose of fiber. This ability to mask its texture as well as its flavor is why I prefer baking with flaxseed. This additive doesn’t feel gritty. It doesn’t feel heavy nor is it a hassle or a chore to mix into your muffin recipe.

On top of all of this, flaxseed is also packed with omega-3 fatty acids. This type of fatty acid is very healthy for you. It has been linked to improved heart health. If you are considering increasing your dietary fiber intake every day, and you do not really want to hassle with ground-up nuts or a dietary fiber daily capsule, just go to your kitchen, fire up the bread machine, whip out the large muffin pan and get to work. Baking fresh cookies, muffins, cupcakes, breads and brownies make boosting your everyday fiber intake a lot of fun, and it also initiates a great and tasty baking adventure.
