Homemade Baking Mix Recipes


Fill your home with the aroma of freshly baked cookies anytime. There is no need to buy processed baking mixes when you can make your own with wholesome ingredients. These baking mixes are easy and convenient to have on hand for family meals and snacks. Just make up the mix ahead of time and use it in the coming months.

Staple Baking Mix

This mix is used for the biscuits, muffins and pancakes.

  • 9 cups whole wheat pastry flour
  • 1 ½ cups instant powdered milk
  • 3 tablespoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 ½ cups cold butter

Combine all ingredients together except butter in a large bowl. Cut in butter with a fork until it is evenly distributed and the pieces are the size of small peas. Using your hands to mix it all up works well. Makes 12 ¼ cups. Store in a tightly covered container in the refrigerator for up to 8 months and use in the following recipes.

Plain Biscuits

  • 2 cups Staple Baking Mix
  • ½ cup water

Preheat oven to 425 F. Put baking mix into a large bowl. Add water and stir until stiff dough forms. Allow to rest 5 minutes. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to ½ inch thickness and cut out 2 inch circles. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 10 – 12 minutes or until lightly browned.

Cheese Biscuits

Add ¾ cup grated sharp cheddar to Staple Baking Mix before adding water.

Onion Biscuits

Add 1 tablespoon dried onion flakes to Staple Baking Mix before adding water. (Here are some great onion choppers for you!)

Plain Muffins

  • 2 ½ cups Staple Baking Mix
  • ¾ cup cold water
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Preheat oven to 400 F. In a large bowl, beat together water, egg and honey. Add baking mix and stir until ingredients are moistened. Fill greased muffin tins ¾ full. Bake 20 minutes or until muffins are browned. Makes 12 muffins.

Blueberry Muffins

Using the recipe above, gently stir in 1 cup fresh blueberries with liquid ingredients.

Cranberry muffins

Using the recipe above, add 2/3 cup chopped fresh cranberries with liquid ingredients.


  • 4 cups Staple Baking Mix
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 eggs

Beat together water and eggs. Add Staple Baking Mix and stir until moistened. Cook pancakes on hot greased griddle (400 F) until small bubbles form. Turn over and cook quickly on the other side. Serve with butter and syrup or crushed fruit.

Staple Oatmeal Cookie Mix

This mix is used for the Oatmeal Drop Cookies, below.

  • 6 cups whole wheat pastry flour
  • ¼ cup baking powder
  • 2 cups instant powdered milk
  • 5 cups quick or minute rolled oats
  • 2 cups butter at room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon salt

In large bowl, sift together flour and baking powder. Add powdered milk and oats and mix well. Cut the butter into the dry ingredients with a fork or use your hands until it is evenly distributed. Makes 15 cups. Put in a tightly covered container and store in the refrigerator for up to 8 months. Use in the following recipe.

Oatmeal Drop Cookies

  • 3 ½ cups Staple Oatmeal Cookie Mix
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup honey
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 F. In a large bowl toss the Oatmeal Cookie Mix and cinnamon. In a separate bowl, stir together the egg, honey, brown sugar, water and vanilla. Add to oatmeal mixture and combine thoroughly. Drop batter by teaspoonful onto greased cookie sheets. Bake 12 minutes or until done. Makes 2 ½ dozen. This makes a biscuit-type cookie.

Variation: Add ½ cup finely chopped raisins or chocolate chips to dry ingredients.
