Sugar drop cookies are amazing, aren’t they? The great thing about sugar drop cookies is that you not only get a nice jolt of sweetness, but this amazing flavor is also packed with a lot of texture. When you bite down on a sugar drop cookie, you get a nice crunch. Now, depending on how much butter is in the recipe, you may be in for a nice, solid crunch with a lot of resistance, or a fairly soft chew. Whatever the case may be, sugar drop cookies can definitely spice up your cookie baking experience.
If you’re the typical cookie baker, you know that baking your 500th batch of chocolate chip cookies is probably not going to be all that much different from your 401st or your 499th. By mixing things up a bit and trying new forms, you can reinvigorate the amount of passion you have with baking. Now, why would you want to do this? Am I in any way suggesting that your level of passion would drop off?
That is precisely what I’m saying. You have to understand that as you get proficient in anything, you also get more bored. I know that sounds hard to believe, but it’s true. Because let’s face it, when you’re first starting out in anything, whether it’s building a website, baking delicious cookies, practicing law, or medicine, you were excited because you’re in uncharted territories. You’re trying something new. You’re going past your comfort zone.
However, after you have handled your 500th case or baked your 5,000th batch of cookies or treated your 500th patient, things get old very quickly. The big curse of competence is boredom. It’s no surprise that a large number of lawyers and doctors also have substance abuse issues. These are people who are otherwise at the top of their game. They’ve been in the game so long that they feel that whatever they are doing is as familiar as the back of their hands. All of us suffer from this, at some level or other. We need to be challenged. It is a key part of the human experience. It is a necessity. Sadly, routine doesn’t deliver the appropriate level of challenge and novelty we crave.
What’s going on? Well, there might be some sort of spiritual dilemma there. There might be some sort of emotional issues that may have been unresolved but by and large, it’s also a function of the fact that competency curves also mirror boredom curves. The more competent you are in anything, the higher the likelihood that you will be bored.
This applies to something as basic as baking cookies, so if you feel that the next batch of oatmeal cookies that you bake with raisins are probably going to drive you mad, you might want to step back. You might want to mix things up by understanding or rediscovering the fact that cookies actually take many different forms.
One of the most exciting and easiest to bake are sugar drop cookies. These are heavy on the sugar, primarily brown sugar, and they pack quite a bit of texture. The great thing about these fresh baked cookies is that you only need to add a tiny smidgeon of spice like cinnamon to truly unlock their flavor potential. It’s like having a flavor explosion in your mouth, it’s amazing.
And the best part to all of this is that when people enjoy your culinary creations, they get a tremendous amount of texture as well. One cookie is never the same as the cookie that has preceded it or the cookie that follows it. Do you see where I’m coming from?
So if you feel bored and you’re thinking of hanging up your apron for good, don’t worry about it. That will pass. You have to remember that there’s a reason why you’re baking and that reason of course, is passion. Unfortunately, a lot of people think that passion only goes in one direction. They think that it’s an upward curving line. It doesn’t. In fact, it’s more of like a roller coaster ride.
Your level of passion, regardless of how competent you are, is often affected and informed by the other things going on in your life. Maybe you woke up at the wrong side of the bed. Maybe you’re suffering from a bad hair day. Whatever the case may be, don’t expect your passion level to always be at its peak.
Spice things up so you can rediscover your passion by simply tapping into your tremendous amount of personal curiosity and sense of adventure. That’s how sugar drop cookies can reinvigorate your love and passion for baking.
