Things we loved
What’s not to love about the Oster 5838? Seriously?! It has everything that you can want in a basic bread machine. It does exactly what it was built for – producing delicious bread in the easiest way imaginable.
How easy is it to use? Well, put it this way, within 2 minutes of taking it out of the box, we were able to have our first loaf baking.
It’s that easy!
The interface on the Oster 5838 is really easy to follow. You have your 8 settings on the left, crust color in the middle, and start/stop button on the right.
When you want to make your first loaf of bread, simply choose the setting on the left, choose the crust color in the middle, and hit start! The Oster 5838 takes care of the rest for you.
This is Oster’s patented 3 step programming at its finest. It completely eliminates the chance for human-error when programming the machine. Unfortunately, you’re on your own when it comes to properly measure ingredients. The manual can help you with anything else you need.
The Oster 5838 can handle white bread, French bread, wheat bread, and everything in between. The digital display on the right will show you exactly how much time there’s left on your bread. You’ll probably begin smelling the bread well before the counter is even halfway done!
If you want a simple, easy-to-use bread machine for making bread, then the Oster 5838 is a great choice for you.

Some minor annoyances
If you’re looking for the Oster 5838 to reliably make dough for pizza and pasta, you’re probably going to be disappointed. We weren’t able to consistently produce pizza and pasta dough. That’s not to say that it isn’t possible to make in the Oster 5838. But it’s probably better to get a higher-end bread machine (find one in our Ultimate Guide to the Best Bread Machines).
That’s not a big deal for most people. One thing that could be problematic is that if you don’t measure your ingredients precisely, or if you’re looking to make gluten-free bread, then you may run into the issue of your bread collapsing. However, this isn’t a problem if you use the recipes that are in the recipe booklet that Oster includes.

There’s a lot to love about the Oster 5838 58-Minute Expressbake Breadmaker. It’s a very easy-to-use, reliable bread machine. In fact, despite there being two newer versions of it, the Oster 5838 continues to sell well!
